Finding maggots in your bin for the first time can be quite an experience. As you can imagine, we get these calls regularly.
We did have to laugh when we heard of a woman who called 999 to the Police to report she had maggots in her bin. You can read that here
The main point to remember is it can be eradicated.
Maggots are basically baby flies, and for every fly you see around your bin, one female can be responsible for laying up to 500 eggs, that’s a lot of maggots and a potential fly infestation.
Flies are attracted by the smell of food, especially meat, and lay their eggs on the food to allow them to thrive. In the right conditions, warm weather and food left in a bin for any period until the next collection date are perfect for maggots to thrive.
If you can take care with how you put the food into your bin by bagging up anything that may potentially acctract the flies to lay their eggs the better.
If you do have maggots in your bin the important thing to do is to get rid of them and ensure that there is no chance of them becoming flies and making the problem infinite times worse.
If you want it done professionally you can book a clean here or if you want to try it yourself make sure that the bin in completely washed, disinfected and scrubbed to make sure that all the eggs are killed.
If you know you are going to be putting some food in that you know will attract flies, ensure that you double bag it first and even keep it in the house bin until nearer your collection day, especially during our hotter months.
